DAMA Midsouth Chapter
The DAMA Midsouth Chapter on March 21 will present “Data Management and Data Administration: Assessing 25+ Years of Practice” by Dr. Mark Gillenson, professor of MIS at the University of Memphis.
The event will take place March 21 at International Paper, 6420 Poplar Ave., Tower 3. The event begins with a reception at 4 p.m., with the presentation beginning at 4:30.
This presentation will compare aspects of data management using a unique set of comparative data obtained from comparable sets of subject matter experts across a quarter-century timeline. This comparison has given us new insight into data management, including its current responsibilities, reporting structures, and perceptions of success, among other factors. Our analysis indicates that successfully investing in data management in today’s IT environment presents real challenges to IT and to organizations.
Data management (DM) has long existed in conjunction with software development and the management of the full set of information technology (IT)-related components. However, it has been more than a decade since research into data management as it is practiced has been published.
- We were presented with an opportunity to compare aspects of DM across a quarter-century timeline – obtaining our data using comparable sets of subject matter experts.
- Using this information to observe some of the profession’s evolution, we have updated our understanding of DM as it is practiced.
- This has given us additional insight into DM, including its current responsibilities, reporting structures, and perceptions of success, among other factors.
- Our analysis indicates that successfully investing in DM currently presents current, real, challenges to IT and to organizations.
- While DM is evolving away from purely operational responsibilities towards higher-level responsibilities, perceptions of success have fallen.
Dr. Gillenson worked for the IBM Corp. for 15 years in a variety of positions, including seven years as a faculty member of the prestigious IBM Systems Research Institute. Subsequently, he was a professor at the University of Miami, Miami FL. Dr. Gillenson’s areas of interest are database management systems, particularly database administration and database design, electronic commerce, systems testing, and RFID applications.
